Love Brings Dividends
Dear Maribeth,
I have a checking account at NewportFed. Recently I received a prospectus in the mail offering the sale of stock in the bank which is converting from mutual ownership to stock ownership. Depositors get first dibs to buy the stock, which is being offered at $10 a share. Is this a good investment?

Dear On the Financial Fence,
Many famous leaders and business people have hired astrologers and psychic counselors to aid them in their important decision-making. Nice job utilizing TarotTalk as a resource! I will certainly see what the cards advise in this financial matter.
The cards that came up for you are the Knight of Wands, the Page of Wands and The Lovers. My first reaction is surprise because I expected to see some pentacles here, as they are the suit symbolizing money. But we have to work with the cards that came up and do our best to understand the message we are being given. As I’ve said before, the toughest part about readings is to empty our minds of pre-conceived notions so as to get the clearest message.
Basically, these 3 cards seem to imply that the bank (represented by the Knight of Wands) is opening up opportunities to you (the Page of Wands) in order to create a more open relationship (the Lovers). No doubt, the Customer Service Gurus have figured out that if they can create trust with their customers, those customers will go to them when they need something. If they give a little somethin’, they’ll get more back and with more people wanting them to succeed, they’ll have more success. Seems like a win-win situation.
I am intrigued by the fact that each card has at least one mountain in it. Mountains are symbols of stability. The mountains are further in the distance in the Knight of Wands than in the Page of Wands. And the one mountain in between The Lovers seems to join everything together. It seems to me that by the bank soliciting participation from those already investing and trusting in them, they have the opportunity to create something together that can bring both parties more stability.
This concept of asking for depositors involvement seems more about establishing a more committed relationship than your financial gain. Yet, based on the cards, I would answer your question: “Yes, it is a good investment.” Make sure you are being honest with yourself about what you can afford, and be sure to read the fine print so you fully understand what you are getting into. Also, find out why the bank is doing this so you can understand how your participation is benefiting them. It’s only fair in love & high finance.
The Lovers in the outcome position does show us that an open relationship can bring about mutual success. Don’t go buy a boat thinking you’re going to receive a huge windfall right away. But if we see those mountains as piles of money, we can see the evolution across time. The piles get closer and larger when shared!
