Long Day’s Journey Into Night

Dear Maribeth,

Over the past month or so I am finding that my sleep has been affected by dreams that seem to last the entire night. They are not necessarily night mares, but they are stressful to the point that when I awaken I feel as if I had “worked” all night long. My work schedule has changed as I am working (3) 12 hour days as opposed to (5) 8 hour days.
The extra days off are wonderful, but I don’t know what is causing the excessive
dreaming!

Sleepless slumber

Dear Sleepless,

It must be very difficult to work a 12 hour day after a restless night of sleep! Let’s see if we can figure out a way to find some relief for you by looking at the tarot cards.

The three cards that came up for your reading are very positive and light energy
cards. The 9 of Cups (also known as the Wish Card), the Knight of Cups and the Empress are in your spread.

The figure shown in the 9 of Cups and the Empress look like they are in their pajamas. That could be a bathrobe the Knight is wearing over his armor. I sense you are having trouble adjusting to your new schedule.

Although the 9 of Cups is the Wish Card, and usually means your wish will come true, it can also mean to be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it! By focusing on the days off you have it may seem worth it to put in all your time in 3 days. However, if you feel like those 3 days you are working are nothing but work and sleep (or trying to sleep), then you will feel off-balance as time goes by. Your work schedule now is affecting your sleep system just as though you thought you could eat a huge meal so you won’t have to eat for a few days. It doesn’t work that way. People need a satisfying daily balance of work, sleep and fun.

The Knight of Cups shows someone offering you something and trying to help. I feel this Knight represents people in your life and also your dreams. He is trying to give you advice to make things easier for you during this time. Please pay attention. You have strained yourself to the extent that even your dreams are busy. Listen to the people who care about you, and listen to your dreams, they often provide divine guidance if you can understand the symbolism.

The Empress is reminding you to take care of yourself. These dreams are a signal that you are pushing yourself to your limits. The company you work for will accept any time and effort that you are willing to give them. It is up to you to draw the line. If you can’t do it, it doesn’t mean you are weak or incapable, it means you respect your body and your time. Love yourself enough to be good to yourself.

Ideally, we have 24 hours in a day so that we can work 8, sleep 8 and have 8 to use as we wish. I encourage you to strive for a better balance in your life. If you can achieve this, I am confident the time you spend sleeping will be restorative and your waking life will be dreamy!
