How will the garden grow?

Dear Maribeth,
I am thinking of planting tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and green peppers in my small vegetable garden this year. Last year, I did the same, except no green peppers. My harvest was not so good. How can I better prep the soil to have better results this year?

Yahoo! I love the season of growing and planting. There are several schools of thought about the correlation of seasons and suits of the tarot. As with most things tarot, I believe the influence of the reader’s intuition is where we can find the truth. My instincts tell me that Swords (the suit of air) symbolize winter, Wands (the suit of fire) is for autumn, Cups (the suit of water) is summer, and Pentacles (the suit of earth) are Spring. Let’s see how many pentacles come up in your spread.
Hmm. You got the 4 of Swords, the Devil, and the Queen of Cups. Not a pentacle in the bunch. Not much green here for your thumb either. Unfortunately this doesn’t bode well. However, your question is asking what you are doing wrong, so it looks like these cards are identifying the problems. Here is my interpretation, I hope this helps you overcome the issues and provides you with a flourishing harvest you can take pride in.
The 4 of Swords looks like someone sleeping in in the morning. tsk tsk. The best time to water is actually very early in the morning, before the sun has a chance to heat up the ground and leaves too much. If you can’t work watering into your morning routine, perhaps you could set a sprinkler to automatically go off in the a.m.. This card also implies that you must get the plants in the ground at the right time so they have a chance to produce vegetables. Waiting too long can result in a weak outcome because there is not enough time to complete the growth cycle. Just ask any farmer; the early bird catches the worm! No time to rest!
The soil isn’t the only important factor in creating a bountiful garden. You must have a nice balance of all of the elements, and a consistent schedule for maintenance. You can’t make up for lost time and watering by drowning arid soil. The Devil is about extremes, and too much of a good thing is bad. Not enough of a good thing is bad too. The female in this picture has a tail of grapes, showing abundance and potential for prosperity. The male figure has a tale of fire. That is dangerous. You must make a commitment to your garden and everyone else may have to wait so you can attend to it. This vegetable garden is important to you and needs your tender loving care to thrive.
The Queen of Cups shows you looking at your results with pride this summer. With the right mix of sunshine, water and your healthy intent, you can do it! By looking at this picture, my advice would be to be sure your soil is not too sandy and don’t let any critters get to it. By the looks of the ground around her throne, I would also suggest that you add some shells or rocks to the soil to prevent the weeds from coming in. Think of how extra delicious a salad will be of your own grown produce! The pride will add so much extra flavor!
